Russell Street

Private Edward John Taylor of the South Wales Borderers died of wounds in England on the 16th October 1918.

Son of Edward and Eliza Taylor of the Apple Tree Inn, 52 Russell Street. Private Taylor had emigrated to New Zealand, but returned home and enlisted.

He served in France and Flanders, after he was wounded, gassed and shell-shocked he was invalided home. He was discharged from the army, but later died from the effects of his wounds.

Private Ernest Henry Guest of the 2nd Inniskillen Fusiliers killed in France on the 21st of March, aged 28

The son of William and Emma Annie Guest of 49 Russell Street. He was a baker by trade, but enlisted just before the outbreak of war and went to France with the expeditionary force. He served as a cook for 3 yrs before being drafted in to the 2nd Battalion in November 1917.

In February 1918 he was in the front line for the German spring offensive and died defending the Boadicea Redoubt near St Quentin, during the last German offensive of the Great War.

His older brother worked in the School of Musketry in Birmingham and his younger brother lost the use of one arm and was discharged from the army.

Private William George Henry Wilson of the 10th Gloucestershire Regiment killed in. France .on. the. 19th. November 1916.

Private Wilson of 33 Russell Street had previously served 10 years in the Royal Marines.

He joined the 10th Gloucestershire Regiment, he was deployed to France in October 1916 and stationed in the Somme sector, his battalion was occupied repairing trenches and occasionally the enemy shelled the lines, he was killed in a shell attack.

Company Sergeant Major Ernest Henry Knight 4th Worcester shire Regiment – died 12th April 1918 aged 40.

Born in Dudley, he was a plate layer with Great Western Railways living at 9 Western Cottages, Russell Place. He was a veteran soldier already having seen service in the South African War and he re-enlisted in 1914. He served for 3 years in the Middle East and France, before being killed in the German spring offensive of 1918. He left a widow Mrs E (Fanny) Knight.
