Marsh Terrace

Sergeant Frederick Taylor of the 8th Rifle Brigade (The Prince Consorts Own) killed in Belgium on the 30th July 1915, aged 32.

Son of James Taylor of 9 Marsh Terrace, Marsh Lane.

The 8th Rifles were part of the 14th (Light)  Division who took over a section of front-line trenches near Hooge in the Ypres sector. On the morning of the 30th July they were subjected to the first use of the petrol fuelled flame throwers in warfare, a mine exploded under the British parapet and then they were sprayed with huge jets of flame. He was killed in this assault - only one man was known to escape from those trenches

Lance Corporal Albert John Yeates 8Th Gloucester Regiment died 18th April 1918, aged 29.

Born in Cheltenham son of Joseph and Amanda Yeates of 1 Marsh Terrace.

He was serving with the battalion defending Kemmel, south of Ypres, when the Germans attempted to take Kemmel Hill, firstly with heavy artillery and then an infantry assault. It is likely he lost his life during the fighting. His brother Private Horace Yeates was wounded in France in June 1915.

Private Wilfred Bullock.jpg

Private Wilfred Bullock of the Machine Gun Corps (infantry) died in France on the 4th of October 1918.

Son of Joseph and Hannah Bullock of 7 Marsh Lane. He served for 8 months in France before being seriously wounded in the head at the Battle of Beaurevoir, he died a day later

Lance Corporal Cyril Henry Cox of the 2nd Devonshire Regiment died in France on the 24th April 1918, aged 18.

Born in Cheltenham, Grandson of William and Fanny Cox of Marsh Lane and was educated at St Pauls PE School.

He was killed in action at Villers Bretonneaux, during the furthest advance of the German army following their spring offensive.

Private Jack Taylor of the 2nd Bedfordshire Regiment, killed in France on the 22nd March 1918, aged 18.

Son of Charles and Alice Taylor of 3 Marsh Lane.

During the spring offensive of 1918 his unit were directly opposite St. Quentin in the Somme sector. Private Taylor was killed on the 2nd day of the German spring offensive.

Pte W Topper Harewell.jpg

Private William Harewell of the 8th Gloucestershire Regiment died in France on the 16th of July 1916.

William 'Topper' Harewell of 5 Marsh Lane, served in the Boer war. He arrived in France in July 1915. He died of wounds sustained in his battalions attacks on La Boiselle, he was evacuated to Boulogne and later died.
